46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do as much?

21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be too.

33 Strive first for his kingdom, and righteousness, and all these other things will be given you as well.

7 ‘Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.

12 ‘So always treat others as you would like them to treat you; that is the Law and the Prophets.
13 Enter by the narrow gate, since the road that leads to destruction is wide and spacious, and many take it;

21 ‘Not everyone who says to me, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of Heaven, only the person who does the will of my Father in heaven.

11 When the Pharisees saw this they said to his disciples, ‘Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?’
12 When he heard this he replied, ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.

36 And when he saw the crowds he felt sorry for them because they were harassed and dejected, like sheep without a shepherd.
37 Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers to his harvest.’

32 Everyone, therefore, who acknowledges me in the presence of others, I will acknowledge in the presence of my Father in heaven.
33 But whoever denies me in the presence of others, I will deny in the presence of my Father in heaven.

38 Anyone who does not take the cross and follow in my footsteps is not worthy of me.
39 Anyone who finds life will lose it; anyone who loses life for my sake will find it.
40 Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me; and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.
41 Anyone who welcomes a prophet as a prophet will have a prophet’s reward; and anyone who welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will have the reward of a righteous person.
42 Anyone who gives so much as a cup of cold water to one of these little onesd as a disciple, Amen I say to you, will most certainly not go without the reward.’

33 ‘Make a tree sound and its fruit will be sound; make a tree rotten and its fruit will be rotten. For the tree can be told by its fruit.
34 You brood of vipers, how can your speech be good when you are evil? For the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.
35 A good person draws good things from a store of goodness; but an evil person draws evil from a store of evil.
36 So I tell you this, that for every unfounded word people utter they will answer on Judgement Day,
37 since it is by your words you will be justified, and by your words condemned.’

43 ‘When an unclean spirit goes out of someone it wanders through waterless country looking for a place to rest, and cannot find one.
44 Then it says, “I will return to the house from which I came.” But on arrival, finding it unoccupied, swept and tidied,
45 it then goes off and collects seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and settle down there, so that the person ends up worse off than before. That is what will happen to this wicked generation.’

11 What goes into the mouth does not make anyone unclean;b it is what comes out of the mouth that makes someone unclean.’

17 Can you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes through the stomach and is discharged into the sewer?
18 But whatever comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and it is this that makes someone unclean.
19 For from the heart come evil intentions: murder, adultery, fornication, theft, perjury, slander.
20 These are the things that make a person unclean. But eating with unwashed hands does not make anyone unclean.’

19 Amen I say to you again, if two of you on earth agree on any matter, whatever you ask, it will be granted to you by my Father in heaven.
20 For where two or three meet in my name, I am there among them.’
21 Then Peter went up to him and said, ‘Lord, how often must I forgive my brother or sister who wrongs me? As often as seven times?’
22 Jesus answered, ‘Not seven, I tell you, but seventyseven times.

3 Some Pharisees approached him, and to put him to the test they said, ‘Is it permissible for a man to divorce his wife for any reason?’
4 He answered, ‘Have you not read that the Creator from the beginning made them male and female
5 and that he said: This is why a man leaves his father and mother and becomes attached to his wife, and the two become one flesh?
6 They are no longer two, therefore, but one flesh. So then, what God has united, no one may divide.’
7 They said to him, ‘Then why did Moses command to give a writ of dismissal and so to divorce?’
8 He said to them, ‘It was because you were so hard-hearted that Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but it was not like this from the beginning.
9 But I say this to you: anyone who divorces his wife – apart from an illicit marriage – and marries another, is guilty of adultery.’

13 Then people brought little children to him, for him to lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples scolded them,
14 but Jesus said, ‘Let the little children alone, and do not stop them coming to me; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of Heaven belongs.’

30 Many who are first will be last, and the last, first.

14 For many are invited but few are chosen.’

16 And they sent their disciples to him, together with the Herodians, to say, ‘Master, we know that you are an honest man and teach the way of God in all honesty, and that you are not afraid of anyone, because human rank means nothing to you.
17 What do you think? Is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not?’
18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, replied, ‘You hypocrites! Why are you putting me to the test?
19 Show me the coin for the tribute.’ They handed him a denarius,
20 and he said, ‘Whose portrait is this? Whose title?’
21 They replied, ‘Caesar’s.’ Then he said to them, ‘So pay Caesar what belongs to Caesar – and God what belongs to God.’
22 When they heard this they were amazed; they left him alone and went away.

11 The greatest among you will be your servant.
12 Anyone who raises himself up will be humbled, and anyone who humbles himself will be raised up.

42 A poor widow came and put in two small coins, of very little value.
43 Then he called his disciples and said to them, ‘Amen I say to you, this poor widow has put in most of all who are putting money into the treasury;
44 for they have all put in money they could spare, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she possessed, all she had to live on.’

29 And Levi held a great reception for Jesus in his house, and with them at table was a large crowd of tax collectors and others.
30 The Pharisees and their scribes kept complaining to his disciples saying, ‘Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?’
31 Jesus said to them in reply, ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
32 I have come to call not the righteous but sinners to conversion.’

27 ‘But I say this to you who are listening: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who treat you badly.
29 To anyone who slaps you on one cheek, present the other cheek as well; to anyone who takes your cloak from you, do not refuse your tunic.
30 Give to everyone who asks you, and do not ask for your property back from someone who takes it.
31 Treat others as you would like people to treat you.
32 If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.
33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do that much.
34 And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners to get back the same amount.
35 Instead, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend without any hope of return. You will have a great reward, and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
36 ‘Be compassionate just as your Father is compassionate.
37 Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven.
38 Give, and there will be gifts for you: a full measure, pressed down, shaken together, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap; because the standard you use will be the standard used for you.’
39 He also told them a parable, ‘Can one blind person guide another? Surely both will fall into a pit?
40 Disciple is not superior to teacher; but fully trained disciple will be like teacher.
41 Why do you observe the splinter in another’s eye and never notice the log in your own?
42 How can you say to another, “My friend, let me take out that splinter in your eye,” when you cannot see the log in your own? Hypocrite! Take the log out of your own eye first, and then you will see clearly to take out the splinter in another’s eye.
43 ‘No good tree produces rotten fruit, nor again does a rotten tree produce good fruit,
44 for every tree is known by its own fruit: people do not pick figs from thorns, nor gather grapes from a bramble.
45 A good person brings out what is good from the store of goodness of the heart; an evil person draws out what is evil from the store of evil. For the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.
46 ‘Why do you call me, “Lord, Lord” and not do what I say?
47 ‘Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and acts on them – I will show you what such a person is like.
48 Such a person is like the man building a house, who dug, and dug deep, and laid the foundations on rock; when a flood occurred the river broke against that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.

6 Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins? And yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight.
7 Yet even the hairs on your head have been counted. There is no need to be afraid: you are worth more than many sparrows.
8 ‘I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me in the presence of others, I will acknowledge in the presence of the angels of God.
9 But whoever denies me in the presence of others will be denied in the presence of the angels of God.
10 ‘Everyone who says a word against the Son of man will be forgiven, but no one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will be forgiven.

25 Can any of you by worrying add a single cubit to your span of life?

26 If a very small thing is beyond your powers, why worry about the rest?
27 Think how the grasses neither spin nor weave; yet, I assure you, not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these.
28 Now if God so clothes the grasses of the field which are there today and thrown into the furnace tomorrow, how much more will he clothe you, who have so little faith!
29 Do not seek what you should eat and drink, and do not worry.
30 It is the gentiles of this world who strive for all these things. Your Father knows you need them.
31 No; set your hearts on his kingdom, and these other things will be given you as well.
32 ‘There is no need to be afraid, little flock, for it has pleased your Father to give you the kingdom.
33 Sell your possessions and give alms. Get yourselves purses that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.
34 For where your treasure is, that is where your heart will be too.

10 Anyone who is trustworthy in the smallest matters is trustworthy in great; anyone who is dishonest in the smallest matters is dishonest in great.

13 ‘No servant can serve two masters: a servant will either hate the first and love the second, or be attached to the first and despise the second. You cannot serve both God and money.’

16 ‘Up to the time of John it was the Law and the prophets; from then onwards, the kingdom of God has been proclaimed, and everyone is forcing their way into it.

17 It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for one little stroke to drop out of the Law.
