Jesus says: [...] One can love more and more and still never reach the limit, because the more one accomplishes and perfects oneself, the more love grows.
What is accomplished in the world, that is, the work accomplished by men, is not subject to any increase. It is finished and remains so. To touch it up, to add parts, would mean to spoil it. But love is not human. It is something superhuman. You have the capacity to love God, because you come from God. That is why Charity can go from perfection to greater perfection as the spirit is perfected.
Ecclesiasticus says: «The fear of God is the beginning of his love, and to it must be united the beginning of faith».
The fear of God is the first degree of love. Those who fear already respect and recognize that the one they fear is someone superior to them, a master or at least a leader. Children who are not perfectly good fear their father. Dependents who are not perfectly good fear their master. Animals that are not perfectly good fear their trainer.
The believer who stops at the first bend of the mystical staircase that climbs to God fears God, whose face he sees shining there, far, far away; a face that, seen from afar, seems severe because only its main features are noticeable, while the smile, the look, the voice go unnoticed. Many are paralyzed by the majesty of God and forget the fatherhood of God, a fatherhood so generous that he even sacrificed his firstborn to save his other children. These believers do not do evil because they fear God and, therefore, will be rewarded with eternal life.
But they will not have the prize which, on the other hand, is – while the earthly journey still lasts – for those who do not limit themselves to fearing God but, overcoming fear, take the second round of the mystical ladder and continue in the desire to know God more closely, for they are certain that if they know Him better, they will love Him ... In fact, the higher they climb, the more they realize what God means. Desire turns into affection. Affection, which God rewards with soft and inviting caresses, becomes love. And love... oh, love, love no longer climbs one step after another. Love has wings and flies ...
